According to Music in Catholic Worship, article 11:
“The power of a liturgical celebration to share faith will frequently depend upon its unity—a unity drawn from the liturgical feast or season or from the readings appointed in the lectionary as well as artistic unity flowing from the skillful and sensitive selection of options, music, and related arts. The sacred scriptures ought to be the source and inspiration of sound planning for it is of the very nature of celebration that people hear the saving words and works of the Lord and then respond in meaningful signs and symbols. Where the readings of the lectionary possess a thematic unity, the other elements ought to be so arranged as to constitute a setting for and response to the message of the Word.”

All of the music selected for the choir and congregation is done so with this in mind. Have you ever really paid attention to the text of the songs we sing on particular days, or listened to the choir anthem after communion and realized the connection between the text of the song and the message of the Gospel or other reading? Or of the season in general? All of our parish musicians strive to focus on a unity of theme and season to make the most of the word of God that is proclaimed that day. Think about what a powerful tool that is, and sing with us!
